single-mode fiber

single-mode fiber
Narrow diameter fiber-optic cable in which lasers rather than LEDs are used to transmit signals through the cable.
Single-mode fiber allows only one route for a light wave to pass through, and it can transmit signals over considerable distances. For this reason, it is often used in telephone networks rather than in local-area networks.
   See also multimode fiber.
